Social Action and volunteering
I am engaged in a number of local volunteer-led projects in London.
Newham NCT - Branch Chair and Team leader
I am Chair and Branch Co-ordinator for Newham NCT having taken this leadership role on in 2011. I am also NCT London Regional Area contact person for five neighbouring Boroughs around Newham. I facilitate a Branch Team of 25 local parents and together we run an impressive range of free groups and services for parents' first 1000 days - from conception to when children reach 2 years old.
In 2014 I was awarded two NCT Star Awards - one for my Creative Approach to Branch Development and another being a Regional Commendation for excellent volunteering work and commitment to NCT.
In November 2016 I was very proud to be named National NCT Volunteer of the Year for my development work with parents in Newham. The founder of NCT Prunella Briance awarded me my trophy and I was overwelmed to meet such an incredible role model in the flesh. A fabulous woman who vowed after a terrible stillbirth experience some 60 years ago, that no other parent should ever have to experience such bad treatment. Our work in NCT continues in this vein as we work to make sure all parents are supported and linked together.
I work with neighbours, local councillors and Newham Council to support people to set up PlayStreets in Newham - to close streets temporarily so that children can play out. The first Newham PlayStreet was held in January 2015 on Tylney Road, Forest Gate and over 100 families came out to celebrate PlayStreets! We now are proud to be Newham's first formal PlayStreet and will have more road closures in 2017.
